The Iron Horse

Saturday marks the 70th anniversary of the famous speech by Lou Gehrig, as addressed to the crowd at Yankee Stadium for the last time. We could all take a few lessons from the Iron Horse.

Here is the full text of the speech from July 4, 1939

Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about a bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth. I have been in ballparks for seventeen years and have never received anything but kindness and encouragement from you fans.

Look at these grand men. Which of you wouldn't consider it the highlight of his career to associate with them for even one day?

Sure, I'm lucky. Who wouldn't consider it an honor to have known Jacob Ruppert - also the builder of baseball’s greatest empire, Ed Barrow - to have spent the next nine years with that wonderful little fellow Miller Huggins - then to have spent the next nine years with that outstanding leader, that smart student of psychology - the best manager in baseball today, Joe McCarthy!

Sure, I'm lucky. When the New York Giants, a team you would give your right arm to beat, and vice versa, sends you a gift, that’s something! When everybody down to the groundskeepers and those boys in white coats remember you with trophies, that’s something.

When you have a wonderful mother-in-law who takes sides with you in squabbles against her own daughter, that’s something. When you have a father and mother who work all their lives so that you can have an education and build your body, it’s a blessing! When you have a wife who has been a tower of strength and shown more courage than you dreamed existed, that’s the finest I know.

So I close in saying that I might have had a tough break - but I have an awful lot to live for.”

Took a ride on the Ferrins trail the other day.  Without a doubt, one of the best rides in the Valley

You know it’s been a tough year for South Carolina when the two biggest stories coming out of the Palmetto State this year are this gem from Miss Teen South Carolina, and of course Governor Mark Sanford’s extremely poor map reading skills that found him canoodling with an Argentinian beauty queen when he thought he was going hiking on the Appalachian trail. Apparently he’s going survive politically for the affair, but the public wont forgive using taxpayer funds to wet his whistle. Pretty stupid move. He should have traveled on his own nickel because he’s going to loose it all to his wife anyway and he might still have a political future.

Shooting Star golf course opened today and I had a chance to take a tour yesterday. Needless to say it’s pretty impressive in every aspect. The course looks very challenging, especially if you hit from the back tee boxes. The Clubhouse has everything you'd ever need and a few things you never will. Locals with a Teton County driver licsence will be able to play on Tuesday afternoons for $50 plus $45 for a mandatory caddie. It will be interesting to see how well the memberships sell in this economy. It seems to me that when people are cutting back, memberships at your second and Shotting Star Jackson holeJackson Hole Shooting Starthird Country Clubs are the first thing they will draw a red line through.
